How to Disable Apple Music Auto Renewal

If you’re like me and you want to try out Apple’s new music streaming service but aren’t sure if you want to keep it or don’t want to forget to opt of the automatic payments, then this tip is for you. I found this over at The Mac Observer and I found it helpful so I wanted to post it here.

Follow these steps to disable automatic payments:

 

  1. Launch the Music app on your device.
  2. Tap the Account Profile icon in the upper left corner.

  • Tap View Apple ID.

  • From there, tap the Automatic Renewal switch to turn off auto payments and then tap done.2015-07-01 18.29.14

You’ll still have access to all of Apple Music’s features during the 90 day trial period. If you decide that you like using Apple Music and want to pay for it, you can head back into your settings and turn Auto Renewal back on.

 

 

Need A Fix For Your iPhone 6?

Starting Monday June15, we will begin offering iPhone 6 screen repairs for $129. We’ve waited so long to offer this repair because until now the parts have simply been too expensive for us to be able to offer this service for a reasonable price and the quality of the parts available did not meet our stringent standards. We’re happy to report that both of these issues have resolved themselves. iPhone 6+ plus repairs are coming soon, too, but not yet.

Our price is still $20 more than Apple’s advertised $109. We still believe our price is reasonable considering the experience you will have when you come to us versus the experience of visiting the Apple store or somewhere else. We love our Apple devices but the process of getting your device repaired in store leaves something to be desired. Having to set up an appointment with a Genius, wait in long lines, stand in crowded lobbies, and slow turn around times can make this experience a hassle. You can expect a totally  different interaction when you step into our shop and are greeted by smiling faces that are eager to help you set up your same day repair.

Refurbished Vs. Used

iPads In The Classroom

The tablet is a device that many of us have come to love and have integrated into our daily lives and activities. We use it to surf the web, check our email, or maybe kick back and watch a movie. In recent years tablets have been used increasingly for other applications such as education.

We live in a world dominated by technology. Many children manage to get their hands (and mouths) on their parents phone or tablet before they can fully walk. So incorporating the technology that students have been inundated with all their lives into the classroom environment seems to make sense.

There’s not a lot of conclusive evidence about the benefit or detriment of using iPads for education since the device’s release in 2010. While some are skeptical that iPads are a distraction from learning in the classroom, early studies from small sample groups seem to be positive. Schools where students use iPads in the classroom seem to show an increase in literacy and competency in mathematics.

I recently spoke with Dr. Gary Jung, one of the customers we support through our EDU program. Dr. Jung is the Head of Technology at Berean Christian High School in Walnut Creek, CA, a small school with a little over 400 students.They manage and maintain about 500 iPads for their program. I asked him if he had noticed a change in the way students learn since iPads were integrated into the classroom. His response was not only positive, but offered some additional insight as well.

Yes, I’ve noticed a change in the way students interact in the classroom. I believe it’s been a success for us, we’ve seen an increase in students test scores coinciding with the implementation of iPads. Technology is the way of the future and I believe it’s a good idea to educate them using the technology that they will go on to use throughout their lives.

While not every school or situation is ready for this shift away from traditional modes of learning, iPads and tablets may have a place in the classroom environment. It’s food for thought when considering the future of public, private and home school scenarios. Will we one day see an educational culture where all students are connected this way? It’s something that you wonder about when you think of the future of iPads in the classroom. What difference do you think it could have made for you as a student? What additional things could our kids learn not just from using an iPad but from breaking and fixing one?

MacBook Pro Retina Repair

When  you pay someone such as a mechanic or electrician to do a job, you’re paying for their expertise. You choose not to do it yourself either because you don’t have the skills or the time and it would be simpler to pay someone to do the job for you.

As experts in repairing Apple products it’s our job to come up with new and innovative techniques  to support these products. We were one of the first and only businesses to offer anit-glare upgrades for MacBooks with glossy displays.

Often times what’s easiest for us isn’t what’s best for the customer. Take the 13″ MacBook Pro LCD repair that we offer for instance.  It would be easiest for us to buy a complete display, take your old one off, and install the new one. We’d be done in no time flat and with minimal effort. Instead, we separate the broken LCD from the display assembly and replace it using a new one. This process is a bit more difficult and time consuming but the price of a standalone LCD compared to an entire new display is considerably lower. The lower cost for us allows us to pass the savings on to our customers.

Apple Watch Unboxing

 

Our 38mm Sports edition Apple Watch arrived today ahead of schedule. We could hardly contain our excitement long enough to take pictures as we eagerly moved it from the box and onto our wrist.

First impressions of the device are that it looks great and feels sleek, but aside from that it’s hard to have an opinion on such a new gadget. So I’m going to wear it out this weekend, test it out, and report back Monday.

Your Rights Are Under Attack

Back in February we published a post to help promote awareness about the encroaching restrictions that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) could place on people and their property. Thanks to organizations like the EFF and iFixit helping to raise awareness and people like you doing their part, consumers sent over 40,000 comments to the Copyright Office urging the restoration of ownership rights.

Companies like John Deere and General Motors are lobbying to decrease the rights that consumers have to use the products that they buy. In essence , changing what it means to be an owner.

Below is a slide show that will briefly get you up to speed on the issue. I’ve also included a link to a great article that explains and relates how  these laws  affect real world people. In the case of the mentioned article, the people affected are farmers that are greatly inconvenienced  by not being able to repair their tractors due to digital locks placed on them.

You may be saying to yourself, “Im not a farmer, how does this affect me?” Restrictions due to the DMCA have been stretched to affect all types technology today commande viagra. These technologies include the car you drive, the cell phone in your pocket, and the computer you may be reading this on.

Adware Removal

os x finder security logoIf you’ve used the internet long enough, chances are you’ve encountered ad-injection software or adware. Adware presents itself in many annoying forms such as pop-up windows, ads, changing your homepage, and extra banners or toolbars when using your browser.

Adware is usually picked up when installing third-party software, it is disguised or bundled with other software that you intend to install. If you think your Mac has been infected with adware then use these steps to rid yourself of this issue.

Check Safari settings and extensions

  1. Open Safari
  2. From the menu bar select Safari > Preferences
  3. Select the General icon and make sure that the Homepage field contains the website you want.
  4. Select the Search icon and make sure that the search engine setting shows your preferred search engine. Some versions of Safari have this setting in the General pane instead.
  5. Click the Extensions icon. If you don’t want an extension or don’t recognize it, select the extension from the list and click Uninstall.

 Removing Adware

Downlite, VSearch, Conduit, Trovi, MyBrand, and Search Protect are all common adware that are found on Macs. You can use this “Go to Folder” method to find and remove each item listed in the sections below, one item at a time:

  1. Drag to select an entire line in the lists below, starting with /System/Library/Frameworks/v.framework, for example.
  2. Choose Edit > Copy.
  3. Open a Finder window, then choose View > As Columns.
  4. Choose Go > Go to Folder.
  5. Choose Edit > Paste to paste the line you copied into the text field.
  6. Press Return.
  • If the item is on your Mac, a window opens with the item you searched for already selected. Drag only that item to the Trash. If you’re asked to enter a password, enter your administrator password.
  • If the item is not on your Mac, you’ll see a message that the folder can’t be found. Continue to the next item in the list.

Repeat the steps above using the files listed below:

/System/Library/Frameworks/v.framework
/System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader/
/Library/Application Support/Conduit/

After you remove the items above, restart your Mac. Then choose Finder > Empty Trash to permanently remove them.

A wild roller coaster ride – A chat about business with Shannon Jean

I decided to sit down and interview my boss and founder of TechRestore, Shannon Jean, about his business history and how he got his start. We go over some of his first business ventures, what it takes to be successful, and any advice he has for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Q: What was one of your first business ventures?

A: A landscape construction company, Hort Services. I was in the Ornamental Horticulture program at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and I ran a landscape and design company up here in the Bay Area to pay for school and living expenses. We pretty much just pretended that we knew what we were doing and somehow it all worked out. I was able to employ most of my friends and I was always amazed that people trusted us so much – with their money and their homes. It was a great experience with lessons that I still use today, 20+ years and 7 companies later.

What drove you to start TechRestore?

A: The architecture and design business brought me into the Mac business. The technology (the Mac) allowed me to present my company better, to look more professional and to charge more – all good things. I would pitch these large projects to clients, and for a long time a lot of things were done by hand and it didn’t look as great while I was pitching the project in the customers living room, asking for big chunks of money with everything designed by hand. The Mac changed my life, both professionally and personally. It allowed me to do more and make things look better so that I could move forward with more confidence. My interest in the Mac is what got me interested in the technology business.

Our discussion led us to the topic of communication.

Q: Do you believe communication to be the number one skill in business?

A: It could quite possibly be the number one skill. Being able to effectively communicate with your customers, business resources (bankers, lawyers, accountants,) and employees is essential. When you first get started in business, you’re essentially self employed, doing everything on your own. As you grow and transition to a business owner, you have to become the facilitator of information, both inside your company, among your employees and partners and outside, spreading the word to existing and potential customers. Having a big mouth helps a lot.

Q: What do you believe your biggest hurdle or obstacle has been in your business career?

A: Getting capital is always a challenge. In my first technology business I had a business partner whose main qualification was that he had a credit card with a $10,000 limit. You know how the saying goes, “it takes money to make money”. You can make money to start but if you don’t reinvest that money or gain capital it can be hard to grow your business. We ran our first Mac business, MacResQ, for about a year before we started taking any money out of the company – I was living on my new wife’s paycheck at the time and we always made sure we left as much cash in the business as we could. 20+ years later and we still do this. Cash is the lifeblood of the company.

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs or business persons?

A: Don’t give up. Embrace failure. Don’t talk to everyone about what you’re going to do, because your close friends and family will be the first to tell you that it wont work. It’s always better to show people what you’ve done, vs. telling them what you are going to do.
Most people will tell you it won’t work, but it’s easy to be a critic. You should be passionate about what it is you’re doing and if you do get outside advice, get it from other business owners and entrepreneurs. Don’t ask people without that experience because they won’t be qualified to comment on it and it’s much easier to tell you what you can’t do. Many times your ideas won’t work, but it doesn’t mean you should stop. If you speak with any succesful person, they could show you a laundry list of their failures in life. Having some failures early on can help you grow as a business person. The key is to succeed more than you fail, of course.

Surrounding yourself with supportive people is important also. There were times when everything around me was crumbling in one business venture or another. Having someone at home that supported me and understood exactly what it was I was trying to create made a world of difference for me. You spend a lot of your time telling everyone else that things will work out, not to worry. Having someone in your life that can tell you the same thing once in awhile can make a big difference.

Q: Did you yourself have a mentor?

A: Yes of course, I still have mentors. One of my first employers in the tech business, Don Ruxton from The Mac Garage in SLO told me, “Outside of your day to day work you should find something that interests you that’s related to the business that can help drive you”. He was absolutely right. This advice came from someone that I volunteered my time to while I was in college to get some technology experience and ended up being my first job working with Apple products. It changed the direction of my life and made all the difference.

Q: What was your first Mac?

A: It was a Mac SE20. It had a 20 megabyte hard drive and 1 megabyte of ram; it cost me about $2,500 at the time. Those are megabytes, not gigabytes! I loved getting my hands on new equipment, but because of the constant upgrade cycle, I knew I had to find a way to fund it. I always knew how to find deals so I got involved with buying and reselling these machines.

Q: What would you say are the least and most enjoyable parts of being in this industry/ business?

On business:

A: The best part is the collaboration and being able to work with people that are much smarter than I am. Being able to help others move up, learn, grow, and provide opportunities. Helping the people that I work with advance is extremely rewarding. I love being able to collaborate with great people whether it be employees, business partners, vendors, or bankers; it’s very fulfilling.

The worst part is that this is a numbers driven game. No matter how much I focus on this being an enjoyable and fulfilling place to work, the cohesion of the team, our interactions with our customers, or the product that we sell. At the end of the day if we don’t get enough money in the door none of that other stuff matters. You constantly have to focus on the numbers, and that is not my favorite part of the business.

On the technology industry:

A: I love getting my hands on the product and being “forced” to buy the latest and greatest piece of technology on the market.

My least favorite part of this industry would be constantly keeping up with the rapid pace of change. Just when you think you’ve got a program in place that works pretty well, that’s about the time you see it start to drop off. This industry always presents new challenges so you have stay on your toes and you constantly have to to reinvent yourself. I have to say I love this business. I sometimes have to remind myself of this because just like with anything else that you do for a long time you may get jaded.

Ending remarks

You have to have a certain personality to want to go into business. Alot of people may get frustrated but its important to stick to it. Try something, measure its effectiveness, and if it doesn’t work try something else. In the technology industry it’s often referred to as “pivoting”. Being able to adapt and readjust your business in different ways is important. I was not in the repair business when I started this company; I was moving product. I was buying product, refurbishing it, and selling it internally. Over the years we became very good at performing quality repairs because we didn’t want the product we sold to come back. Eventually as the market shifted, I saw how our expertise in repairing these products could translate into another business. Now, TechRestore performs repairs, refurbishes tens of thousands of Macs, iPads and iPhones. We also have a fast growing wholesale parts division that sprang up a few years ago to service the rapidly growing retail iOS and Android repair businesses that are popping up all over the country. It’s been a great and wild roller coaster ride that I’m thrilled to be a part of each day.

Inside The iPad Air 2

The iPad Air 2, released in October of last year, boast being better in every way than its predecessor. It has more ram (2 gigabytes), a faster A8X processor, and an improved retina display. All the while being eighteen percent thinner than the original iPad Air.

We take a look inside of one as  we break it down to figure out out how to repair it.

For the most part the iPad Air and iPad Air 2 are configured in the same way. The two main differences being the the LCD/glass portion and the home button. You can see the difference in the two screens in the pictures above. In the picture to the left we have an iPad Air 2 screen. The digitizer (touch screen glass) and the LCD (displays images) are fused together, this is partly what allows this model to be 6.1mm thin as opposed to the older models 7.5mm thickness. The picture to the right displays a first generation iPad Air digitizer and LCD separately.

Another big design change in this model of iPad is the Touch ID sensor in the home button. Touch ID is Apple’s shot at bringing more security to their devices. This technology is implemented in many of the device’s functions such as unlocking the iPad and access to online, App Store purchases, and in-store credit card purchases (Apple Pay). Due to each home button being designed to function with one specific device for security purposes, a problem arises if this part is ever damaged. This means that even if the broken part were replaced the Touch ID features would never function as normal again, this just adds another degree of difficulty when repairing this product.

While the new design allows the iPad to be thinner and lighter, it also makes the repair a bit more difficult. If you were to replace the glass on an iPad Air 2 you would need to replace the entire display (which is expensive) or remove the glass that’s fused to the LCD (which is very labor intensive). Our technicians are working diligently to perfect the process so that we can add iPad Air 2 services to our repair offerings.

Change

TechRestoreEDU-logoThis industry is always changing, and with it, so too does our business. It’s up to us to follow market trends. When a new device is released we have to buy it, open it, take it apart, and decide if its a viable product to support.

Several years ago, we did a lot of repair and support of Macbook and other Apple computers. With the advent of the iPad in 2010, we’ve seen an increase in the number of iPad repairs we do, and conversely a decrease in the amount of MacBooks that we see in. This is due in part to the needs of the consumer. Many users find an iPad or tablet to be adequate for web browsing, email, and other simple task that they would otherwise use a laptop for. When you factor in price, an iPad being cheaper than a comparable Macbook, the decision is simple.

All this means is that we’ve had to shift our focus a bit. Schools all across the country are adopting the use of iPads in the classroom as interactive learnings tools in the place of textbooks and computers. In recent years we’ve partnered with many schools and districts across the nation to repair and support their devices.

Our EDU program is a relatively new part of our business and one that we are trying to bolster. We recently hired on a new man to our team, Mark, for a position that didn’t previously exist. Change in this business as well as in life allows for growth and opportunity. Congratulations are in order for Mark as he makes his first sale and settles into his new position as EDU Sales Representative.
