August 2018 Highlights from TechRestore

There is one more week of August left. So much has been going on already (and don’t forget the holiday weekend coming up!) we couldn’t wait for this month’s recap.

That’s right, school is back in full swing! We love the clever teachers and school administrators who keep students (of all ages) engaged. It is the surest way to encourage retention and curiosity. In that spirit, TechRestore has programs and specials for schools, districts and individuals alike.

Also in August, we started a new tradition: First Responder’s Shout Out Day! Every first of the month, we’ll take a moment to appreciate all First Responders and Military personnel past and present. We started with Louisville Metro Police Department, our local heroes with a great sense of humor. Their FaceBook page is h-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s.  Remember that all First Responders and active or former Military can take 10% off our services, accessories and Certified Refurbished devices every day. We do this not only because some of our TechRestore team have served, but as a reminder to appreciate those whose jobs we sometimes take for granted.

August also marked a birthday, a big milestone and a bittersweet memory for Apple.

  • August 11th was Apple co-founder Steve “Woz” Wozniak’s 68th birthday. Although he is not involved with Apple any longer, he continues to innovate and inspire the tech industry.
  • The 24th marked seven years since Steve Jobs left his position as the charismatic, visionary face of Apple. It was never an official statement, but pretty much everyone knew his time with us was coming to an end. Just two months prior, he proposed Apple Park to the Cupertino City Council.
  • The same day Jobs left Apple, Tim Cook was appointed CEO. It was not necessarily well received at the time, but there’s no doubt that Tim was the right choice. He has seen the futuristic campus built and opened, spearheaded initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of the company and led Apple to a TRILLION dollar valuation (WOW).

Speaking of money

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your device or turn that electronics graveyard drawer into cash – TechRestore is your best choice for trade-ins.

We’ve been in the consumer electronics repair business for a long time and we understand what a nuisance it can be to get the most cash for your devices. TechRestore will pay you more than our competitors AND we make it easy.

  1. Bring your device to us. We have to see it before we can make you an offer. If you are a business with several (or a hundred) devices to turn in, contact us first to make arrangements.
  2. Our techs will do a thorough functionality test.  We’ll also check for iCloud lock and make sure it’s ready to sell (so your personal info is safe).
  3. We’ll make you an offer. Right now our offers are coming in at 10% MORE  than our local competitors, including Apple. If you like it, take it! If not, that’s fine too. There is no obligation to sell it to us.
  4. We’ll pay you – SAME DAY. That’s right! With very few exceptions, we send you home with your payment.  If you prefer to trade in for credit on devices or accessories we have in store, we’ll apply it toward that purchase. What devices can you trade-in? Great question. As you probably know, we specialize in Apple device repairs but we have been known to take other brands for trade-in, too. The most common trades we see are:

We also have school, corporate and local business customers who upgrade their deployments every couple of years. Typically, we take those trade-ins and apply them as credit toward future repairs. That can make a big difference to a bottom line, as well as save a lot of headache down the road.

Even if the device is broken we will look at it (it won’t be worth as much, of course, because it will need repair). Inevitably, there will be devices we simply can’t buy. If it’s very outdated or damaged, we will still be able to responsibly recycle it for you at no charge (and offer to secure your personal data for you).

Every Picture Tells a Story – Contest!

It happens.

Screens break.

We know, because for over 14 years, we have been repairing broken Apple devices. iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, even Apple Watch and iPod … these ingenious, portable devices are, by their very nature, in harm’s way.

There are countless ways to break a screen, and there’s a story behind every one.

“I was wearing it while jogging and tripped.”

“It was either drop the baby or drop the iPad.” (they made the right choice)

“I was listening to music and left my earbuds on the keyboard when I closed the case.”

“I set my phone on top of the car and forgot until I heard it hit the street.”

“I fell asleep and my phone slid down and landed on top of my MacBook (breaking both screens!).”

“I was taking a picture of the sunset, when a bird suddenly started swooping on me! I ran and finally threw my phone at it in self defense!”

We have heard so many stories. Some are pretty common and then, there are some pretty unusual ones! Sometimes the story is so good, it’s almost worth the broken device.

The point is, that for every busted screen there is a real person. No matter how it happened, we like to hear about it  (only because we can relate AND we can help!). It also helps lessen the pain of repair costs.  And who knows, maybe your story will help some other poor soul down the line who thinks their cat is the first one to bat their phone onto the tile floor.

So, in the interest of healing a community (ok, that’s an overreach, but our intentions are good!) TechRestore is hosting a contest. Of course, there are stories that really are too traumatic to recall, so please, don’t relive it if that’s the case. But, if your story is funny or ordinary or nonexistent (we had a customer come in once with a terribly shattered screen … protector .. the screen was actually fine and we put a new tempered glass on for her anyway!)  then please, by all means, share it!! You may be helping someone else who’s feeling embarrassed about their own broken screen.

TechRestore vs Siri Where it Really Matters

Oh, Siri, we love you!

“I value you.”

Well, she is the Sassiest AI Assistant. She first came to us on the iPhone 4s in October 2011 and  “Wowed” us with her weather telling, message answering, music playing and seemingly endless pun-filled answer giving.

Siri has hung out and had wild adventures with celebrities. Some people even make Siri a full time occupation.

Deep learning networks that map your habits and preferences are what makes Siri so smart. Some say that soon she will know you better than anyone (yikes!). It will be a while still before she (or he, depending on your ‘personality’ choice) responds in a really conversational manner. Apple has a large team that works on improving Siri constantly. She works across many platforms and has slightly varying levels of skill on each one.

This Fall, with iOS 12, Siri will utilize Workflow. You will be able to organize a series of tasks: playlists, HomeKit actions, send messages, check itinerary, etc. So you give one command and Siri sets a whole scenario in motion.

And Siri is wonderful! She can make you smile and answer questions and send messages for you. But …

She can’t see you smile, or shake your hand or listen to your concerns. She can’t repair your Apple devices and she doesn’t remember how long you’ve  been working on a particular issue.
