Apple Versus Samsung

So which is better, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or the iPhone 6 Plus? Watch as these phablets are tested head-to-head to determine which is superior.

So which one is it? The test results are a bit inconclusive, but I think the winner is the blender.

The World’s Smallest Movie

This is the world’s smallest stop-motion film titled “A boy and His Atom: The World’s Smallest Movie”. The film was made made by IBM researchers during their research in the field of atomic memory. IBM researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to move thousands of carbon monoxide molecules into position and capture the shots for the film.

From IBM site:

In 2012, IBM scientists announced the creation of the world’s smallest magnetic memory bit, made of just 12 atoms. This breakthrough could transform computing by providing the world with devices that have access to unprecedented levels of data storage.

While laptops and smartphones get thinner and more compact, the future of computing may be a lot smaller than some of us realize. You can enrich your mind and learn more about atomic memory, data storage, and big data here at the IBM website.

Coming in to a great customer review

Jim Tuohy made our Thursday morning with this wonderful review of his iPad purchase from our eBay store. Thanks Jim!

Gail and Dawn,
I received the 2nd unit less than 24 hours after shipping the damaged one back to you. I have it charged up and it checks out very good. No issues.
Thank you for your help with this situation. The following is the review I left on ebay as well as excellent feedback.

This is difficult, how do you give a 10 STAR company only 5 STARS. The Apple IPAD is known as an excellent product and you can buy one from many sellers. The difference in you purchasing/owning experience is working with TECHRESTOREREFUB on ebay. My ipad came in late Friday night with a small crack in the glass at the corner in the frame area. The seller emailed me to make sure I had opened it and answer any questions, I mentioned the crack, “NO,NO,NO we only sell perfect products” they replied with a shipping label to return it. I dropped it off at a UPS Store Monday morning before 9:00 by Tuesday afternoon I had a replacement. They suggested I order another one and would receive FULL credit for the “not perfect” one. I did and opted for the fast shipment. When I buy my next Apple product IF THEY DON’T SELL IT — I’M NOT BUYING. Excellent Customer Service. I even decided to call to confirm the purchase / credit transaction. I expected 45 minutes minimum of listening to music, then a long automated menu. One ring, 4 item menu, 2 rings and the person who wrote the email said “Hello Jim, I’m so sorry we had a problem ……” This before I could even say ‘hello’. This company stands behind their products and makes sure the customer knows who is king , THE CUSTOMER IS. Buy from this Seller. The prices are great, the products are great and the company is beyond belief. “

I look forward to a continued relationship with you and your company.
Thanks for being GREAT

How to Improve Performance of iOS 8 On Older Devices

When I installed iOS 8 on my older iPad 2, I noticed something. It got a bit slower. Launching or switching between apps just didn’t seem as fast and animations didn’t seem as smooth. Although I can’t expect my older iPad to keep up with a newer model, there are a few small tweaks that I can make. So here’s what I did.

ipad settings icon

change a few settings to improve performance

Reduce Motion

Turning on the reduce motion feature in iOS removes some animations and the parallax effect, which frees up resources and can add a small boost to performance. To turn on this feature go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion. Tap to turn Reduce Motion on.

Reduce Transparency

The next thing  you could do is reduce the transparency. Reducing the transparency will replace the frosted glass look of some areas and replace it with a solid gray. To change this go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast > Reduce Transparency > On.

Check Storage

It is possible to see reduced performance if the  storage of your iPad is becoming full. If you notice your iPad’s performance suffering, check the amount of storage you have left. To do this go to Settings > General > Usage > Look at the Available Storage section. If you see that your storage is close to capacity, try deleting a few unused apps.

These tips should help to increase performance if your experiencing trouble after updating.

Getting your customers to love you…

The Wall Street Journal posted the full video of their interview with Tim Cook from their WSJD Live Global Tech conference today. You can view the video below – it’s worth your time.

One thing that struck me was when Tim said: In “the long arc of time, you are only relevant if customers love you,” he said.

Today when I came into the office, I noticed some customer “Love” in the break room in the form of a dish of candy, wrapped with the schools name and mascot. Thank you Berean Christian High School for your ongoing support and for taking care of our chocolate fix today! Go Eagles!

Customers love TechRestore!

Here’s the video with Tim Cook. It’s almost as good as the candy:

New WireLurker Malware Attacks iOS and OS X

Security research firm Palo Alto Networks published a research article Wednesday about a new malware that affects iOS and OS X devices.

Wirelurker attacks iOS devices and Macs

From Palo Alto Networks:

WireLurker was used to trojanize 467 OS X applications on the Maiyadi App Store, a third-party Mac application store in China. In the past six months, these 467 infected applications were downloaded over 356,104 times and may have impacted hundreds of thousands of users.

WireLurker works by monitoring any iOS device connected via USB with an infected OS X computer. Once it detects such a device it installs third-party applications or other malicious applications onto the device. Once the malware has affected the device it can steal sensitive information, self replicate, request and receive updates from the creator, and hide itself within the system. This malware’s characteristics make for one  really nasty virus.

But there are steps that you can take to prevent or minimize your chance of infection.

  • Only download apps from trusted sources (e.g. Mac App store)
  • Use an antivirus software and keep signatures up to date
  • Do not pair your iOS device with any untrusted computer
  • Keep your iOS and OS X version up-to-date
  • In your OS X System Preferences under Security and Privacy make sure you have the option “Allow apps downloaded from: Mac App store and identified developers” checked
  • Avoid charging your device your device through unknown or untrusted sources

This shouldn’t be of much concern to most users, so far users have mostly been targeted in China. But precautions should still be taken to be safe.

Devices Compatible With Continuity For iOS and OS X

Continuity is a new feature in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite that allows users to easily move between  their iOS device and Apple computer. With this feature you can receive and answer phone calls and SMS messages directly from your computer, as well as start typing an email on your iPad using the mail app and instantly continue from your computer. Awesome, right?

However, not all devices are compatible with this feature. You’ll need a device with iOS 8 and a computer with OS X Yosemite installed on it. Users with older hardware  will be out of luck, as this feature can only be used on more recent hardware.

The Other Side

In a digital world where we are bombarded with information and advertisements at every turn, it’s not often that an ad genuinely grabs your attention. That’s why Honda’s new ad, entitled “The Other Side”, for their Civic Type R concept is interesting.

honda type r the other side

The ad shows a  family man in his Civic, chauffeuring his kids around by day but becoming a getaway driver by night, speeding away from the police in his Type R. The video is shot in two parts that play out simultaneously, depicting the alternating lifestyles of the man in his Civic. As the viewer, you can hold the R Key to switch back and forth between the videos. This trick makes for a really cool effect. Take a ride for yourself and watch it here.
